Distributed Renewable Energy - Livelihoods

Nurturing the Roots of Entrepreneurship Across Karnataka through Sustainable Solutions

GAME’s partnership with SELCO Foundation empowers urban micro-entrepreneurs through climate-smart, decentralized renewable energy solutions, focusing on women entrepreneurs in Karnataka’s Bengaluru and Hubli-Dharwad regions. The collaboration delivers impactful interventions, ecosystem development, and real-life success stories to drive inclusive and resilient economic growth.

Who We Are

GAME, in partnership with SELCO Foundation, is dedicated to strengthening local entrepreneurial ecosystems through sustainable energy-driven solutions. It is a first-of-its-kind urban initiative, bringing climate-resilient, sustainable livelihood solutions to Bangalore and Hubli- Dharwad urban poor, as urbanisation rises from 37% to a projected 50% by 2030. By leveraging clean energy as a catalyst, the partnership aimed to simultaneously address poverty alleviation, prioritising gender inclusivity, and environmental sustainability.

What We Do

  • Empower Entrepreneurs: The program supported 1,000+ entrepreneurs with a strong emphasis on women-led enterprises.
  • Deploy Climate-Smart Solutions: Over 642 solar-powered devices, from sewing machines to food processing mills, have been implemented to improve productivity and working conditions.
  • Capacity Building: 2,095 individuals and self-help groups were trained in renewable energy technologies and sustainable business practices.
  • Ecosystem Development: Partnerships with more than five technology providers, financial institutions, local NGOs, and government schemes fostered access to innovation and financial resources.

Impact & Insights

  • Inclusive Growth: More than 214 women entrepreneurs received dedicated support, easing the physical strain of manual work and unlocking new income streams.
  • Community Resilience: Through numerous awareness sessions, technology melas, and live demonstrations, the program has built strong evidence of how climate-smart solutions can enhance productivity and resilience for more than 2000 urban microentrepreneurs.
  • Productivity Boost: Users have reported a notable increase in their monthly earnings following the intervention, primarily due to reduced manual effort, enhanced output, and longer operational hours.
The transition from manual to mechanised, solar-powered systems has greatly reduced physical strain, drudgery and repetitive labour for entrepreneurs. For eg, in pottery units.
  • Sustainability: 13 types of DRE solutions implemented, including 2 group-level interventions with FPOs in Dharwad.
